NaNoWriMo Prep – journey to your first 50,000 words
Ever wanted to write a novel? Ever tried NaNoWriMo? This is a workshop for all creative writers who want to write a novel and are interested in participating in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), which takes place worldwide Nov. 1 – Nov. 30.
NaNoWriMo’s challenge is to write 50,000 words in 30 days—which is possible, but hey, those rapid-fire 50,000 words can often lead you on paths you never find your way back from—in other words, a novel you never finish. Then that hard work ends up in a drawer, or in the trash. Don’t be that writer!
NaNoWriMo Prep will take the guesswork out of crafting your story and give you tools to help you finish your novel! We’ll hone our ideas into concepts by challenging our writer selves with informed questions so that we can avoid the pitfalls of loss of interest, writer’s block, boring drafts, and Nowheresville groundwork.
All you need for this class is a story idea and a determination to write your butt off for 30 days in November. All writing levels and experiences welcome. For more information on NaNoWriMo, check out the site: nanowrimo.org
Location: Traip Academy, Kittery, Maine
Dates: Mondays Sept. 25 and Oct. 2, 16, 23
Time: 6:30-8:00 pm
Sign-ups will be through Kittery Adult Education.
The Write Track—taking control of your writing
Have a character that just won’t listen? Trouble finding the time to write? Can’t decide if the world you built is immersive enough? Worried your story idea isn’t interesting? Want to make writing a part of your life but not sure how to begin . . . or how to make it stick? Welcome to the growing pains of writerhood. Fret not, these issues and many more are normal! For 6 weeks, we’ll learn strategic ways to help you take control of your writing.
Writers will be given inspirational writing prompts, strategies to overcome writer’s block, story structure checklists, goal-setting schedules, and more to help them get on the “write” track with their project and move forward. Time outside of class will be used to share your work for feedback. Writers will need a work in progress or a figment of a story idea.
Location: Dover, NH
Dates: Wednesdays October 11, 18, 25, November 1, 8, 15
Time: 6:30-7:30 pm
Sign-ups are through Dover Adult Learning Center
Dare to Write (for Young Writers)
This creative writing program for middle graders is a fast-paced, interactive journey into the world of storytelling. Students will sharpen their skills as we explore elements such as plot, theme, dialogue, character arcs, and scene-building—to name a few. We will discuss and practice the three main parts of craft: imagining, writing, and editing. Writers can choose to dabble with story ideas and build a portfolio or begin and complete their own short story.
Open to students in 5th – 8th grade at Dover Middle School who love to write!
Number of spots available: 10
Dates: October-November 2017, Tuesday afternoons after school
Sign-ups are through Dover Middle School, STEAM Academy
I Love to Write (for Younger Writers)
Experience the joys and fun of creative writing through games, art, music, and yes, writing! Great writing needs a toolkit packed with your own ideas, a hunger to learn, and a willingness to practice. This class emphasizes the importance of hooking readers, word choice, interesting characters, and planning! Writers will be given the choice to build a portfolio based on multiple story ideas or work on a single story.
Open to students in 1st-4th grade at Woodman Park Elementary School and Garrison Elementary School. *Students must be able to write independently.*
Dates: TBA, but the waiting list is open. Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org to reserve your spot.
